If you’ve recently had shingles, you may be at risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia, a condition that leads to chronic pain. Vortex Health specializes in neuropathy pain and chronic pain management without relying on opioids or other medications. With a personalized and hands-on approach, our team can help you manage the pain and improve your quality of life.

The Condition

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a chronic pain condition that affects the nerves and skin. It is caused by damage to nerve fibers from the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. After an episode of shingles, the pain can continue for months or even years. PHN can cause burning, stabbing, and shooting pain in the affected area. While there is no cure for PHN, we offer personalized treatments to improve the symptoms.

Symptoms:

  • Burning, stabbing, and shooting pain in the affected area
  • Constant or intermittent pain that lasts for months or even years
  • Hypersensitivity to touch, clothing, or temperature changes in the affected area
  • Skin sensitivity, tingling, and itching
  • Numbness and muscle weakness in the affected area
  • Fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood changes due to chronic pain
  • Reduced mobility and functional limitations
  • Increased risk of depression and anxiety due to ongoing pain

Potential Causes:

  • Damage to nerve fibers from the varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
  • Age-related changes to the nervous system that reduce its ability to regenerate nerve fibers
  • Genetic factors that increase susceptibility to developing PHN
  • A weakened immune system due to underlying health conditions or medications
  • Intense or prolonged pain during the shingles episode
  • Presence of additional chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia or arthritis
